Comas Kala 20” trials frame from the prestigious Spanish brand Comas Trials. Developed and tested over two years to the highest quality standards. With an exclusive design and significant improvements, it is the same frame with which Eloi Palau won the UCI Trials World Championship 2022.
Description and Materials
- Made from 6061-T6 aluminum alloy with 7075-T6 machined parts, achieving the best balance between low weight and high strength.
- Tapered head tube for integrated headsets with an upper diameter of 1 1/8” and a larger lower diameter of 1.5”.
- Hydroformed lower down tube, optimizing tube sections for maximum strength with minimal weight.
- The head tube has an opening that removes unnecessary weight.
- The main tubes are joined to each other and to the head tube by reinforcement welding, along with additional lower plates, ensuring maximum rigidity and strength of the front section.
- PressFit BB30 bottom bracket shell, with mounts for a Comas mini bash plate.
- The upper chainstays are joined to the top tube by a gorilla reinforcement, essential to prevent flexing of the rear of the bike.
- The lower chainstays are connected by a small reinforcement tube, acting as a bridge, increasing rigidity in this area.
- Integrated Post Mount disc brake mounts on the left dropout, machined in a single piece for maximum possible strength.
- The dropout, CNC machined in a single piece, integrates a closed mount for a thru-axle and a mount for a dual pulley chain tensioner (not included with the frame). Thanks to this system, the wheel is always perfectly centered.
- With the sprung chain tensioner, the chain tension can be adjusted directly and instantly, without needing to loosen the rear hub bolts or move the wheel.
- Both dropouts are closed, spaced at 116 mm, and designed only for a 12 mm diameter rear thru-axle.
- Note: Comas 12mm Hub Thru-axle, headset, bash plate, and chain tensioner are not included, available separately.
The 7 Key Compatibility Points
Below you can find the main details to consider for assembling this frame:
1) Headset. Since the head tube of this frame is tapered, with an upper diameter of 1 1/8" and a lower diameter of 1.5", it is compatible with internal headsets of 1 1/8" – 1.5".
2) Bash Plate. This frame includes mounts for a 4-bolt mini bash plate on the bottom bracket shell. Compatible with the Comas bash plate, Crewkerz using 5 mm washers, and with Jitsie and Clean Strong plates using 2.5 mm washers.
Ensure to place the serrated edge facing backward for correct installation.
3) Bottom Bracket. A Press Fit BB30 bottom bracket (threadless) must be used. That is, a bottom bracket where the cups are pressed into the frame (instead of threaded). Compatible with Crewkerz and Clean BB30 cranksets.
4) Rear Brake. This frame includes Post Mount disc brake mounts, so a rear disc brake of this type must be used. Post Mount brake calipers mount vertically on the mount, instead of laterally (as is the case with IS calipers).
5) Chain Tensioner. This frame requires a sprung chain tensioner, so it is not compatible with eccentrics or other types of tensioners. Compatible with Comas, Clean X2, Clean X2 Pro, Crewkerz chain tensioners, and those of identical dimensions.
6) Rear Hub. This frame has a 116 mm dropout spacing and allows the use of:
7) Fork. Since the head tube of this frame is tapered, with an upper diameter of 1 1/8” and a lower diameter of 1.5”, it is compatible with tapered forks of 1 1/8” – 1.5”. If you want to use a standard 1 1/8” diameter fork, an adapter ring for the lower cup can be installed, available here.
The steerer tube of your fork must be long enough to sit at least 2 mm above the top bolt of the stem base.
To ensure this, we must add the length of the frame’s head tube (in this case, 120 mm), the part of the cups that protrudes from the head tube, the headset spacers (if used), and/or dust caps that sit under the stem, and also the height of the stem base you want to use. Once these calculations are made, you can check if your fork is long enough to sit 2 mm above the top bolt of the stem base.
Dimensions (with a 370 mm fork, +40 mm offset)
- Space between dropouts: 116 mm.
- Bottom bracket shell: 68 mm.
- Head tube: 120 mm.
- Wheelbase: 1008 mm.
- Chain stay lenght: 350 mm.
- Bottom bracket height: + 85 mm.
- Head angle: 72º.
Finish
- Silver with Comas graphics in fluorescent yellow.
